A reimagination of the cover of Booker Prize 2019 Shortlist 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World by Elif Shafak. The goal was to create an eye-catching narrative at first glance, but also allow the reader to regard the cover afresh after they finish the book and appreciate the visual symbolisms within.
I play with symbolisms such Tequila Leila's dream to be a blue betta fish in the ocean, sunrise (a new tomorrow), the red light of the brothel, Turkish ornaments... The story is set in Istanbul, the fragmented, strange, contradictory city which Shafak writes as if it was a protagonist with a life of its own. I felt it was important that this city was conveyed one way or another through ornaments or the actual skyline (with the Bosphorus Bridge that played a huge part in the story).
