Prestivo Gifts & Sourcing reached out to me in need of a pattern reflecting Malaysia's multiculturalism. This pattern is printed on a limited edition hand bag that they hope to launch as part of Visit Malaysia 2026, a national campaign aiming to promote tourism through cultural showcases and festivals.
"Mosaic of Malaysia" was one concept out of three options that the client chose. It is a seamless pattern featuring diverse cultural items from the Baba Nyonya or Peranakan community descended from early Chinese settlers who intermarried with local Malays, especially in places like Malacca and Penang. They are known for their unique blend of Chinese and Malay traditions, including distinctive cuisine, clothing, language, and customs. You can see various wau (Malaysian kite), lanterns, Peranakan tiles, and the peony (a popular motif appearing across Peranakan wares).
The target audience is likely women and an alternative palette would not be attractive to them. Instead, I went for a vibrant and light colour scheme that is more sweet-looking and versatile with various clothing styles and colours. However, the client wanted it to be more bold and elegant, so I made another option with darker outlines to give it a stronger look.
